miao letter lhya

Miao Letter Lhya

26/149

𖼙 is a consonant letter in the Pollard Miao script; in a written syllable, it supplies the opening consonant, while vowel signs and tone marks complete the reading. The script was developed for Northeast Yunnan Miao communities, and this letter is also used in Black Yi writing. Vowel signs can sit around the consonant, so display depends on a font and app with complex-shaping support.

What 𖼙 means

It supplies the syllable's opening consonant.

Vowel signs and tone marks arranged around it complete the reading, so the letter usually works as part of a written syllable.

Pollard Miao was developed in 1904 by Samuel Pollard and others for Northeast Yunnan Miao communities, also called A-Hmao. Its early purpose included literacy teaching and Christian scripture, including a New Testament translation. The design drew on Latin letter variants, English shorthand, Miao pictographs, and Cree syllabics, a writing system used for Cree languages.

After revisions, the 1936 New Testament translation used a more stable form. A reform in the 1950s changed, among other things, how tones were marked. The script also serves Miao, Yi, and Lisu languages; this letter is documented for Black Yi.

Why can a Miao syllable render incorrectly?

A font may contain the letter but lack its layout support.

Vowel signs in this script sit around the consonant, and their positions can mark tone. A font can contain 𖼙 yet still arrange a complete syllable incorrectly. As of 2026, the Miao Unicode font documentation says its complex rendering needs Graphite support; use a Miao-capable font in an app that supports its shaping system.

Why does 𖼙 show as a box?

The selected font may not include this letter. If the letter appears but the full syllable is malformed, the font or app may lack the shaping support used for the vowel-and-tone layout.

Why is 𖼙 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
