miao letter te

Miao Letter Te

73/149

𖽈 is a Miao-script letter for the opening consonant of a syllable, documented for Bai Yi; alone, it does not convey a complete word. In Miao text, it combines with a vowel or ending consonant and tone marks, so its sound and meaning come from the surrounding writing. The script began as a literacy tool and later also became a marker of community identity.

What 𖽈 means

It opens a syllable; it is not a word by itself. Unicode lists 𖽈 as a Miao letter used in Bai Yi. In Miao writing, an opening consonant joins a vowel or ending consonant and a tone mark to make a syllable.

The script serves several language communities and spelling systems, but this exact letter is annotated for Bai Yi. “Te” is a reference label written in Latin letters; it does not guarantee the letter's pronunciation.

Miao writing was built for literacy, then carried identity

The Miao script was created around 1904 by Samuel Pollard and others for the Miao language of Northeast Yunnan. It was first used in 1905 and revised repeatedly, until a stable form was used for a translation of the New Testament, the Christian scriptures, in 1936. Early use centered on teaching literacy and Christianity and publishing books in the A-Hmao language.

That purpose did not fix its meaning. A-Hmao readers adopted Pollard writing as a recovery of a legendary lost script; after the People's Republic of China took control, it also served general texts, while Latin-based alternatives and later reforms competed with it. The result is a script tied both to Christian print history and to Miao cultural identity.

The design has a documented mixed lineage: Latin-letter variants, English shorthand, Miao pictographs, and Cree syllabic signs—all characters representing syllables—influenced the script. Reforms in the 1950s and the 1988 recension changed how tone is marked, so a text can follow a different orthography without turning 𖽈 into a different letter.

How should I read 𖽈 on its own?

Alone, 𖽈 identifies a Miao letter, not a complete word. If someone sends it without Miao text, treat it as a sample of the script; ask which language or spelling system they mean.

Display can change the apparent shape or placement of marks around it. Miao syllables use vowel or ending signs and tone marks, and older and reformed orthographies handle their placement differently. If a mark is missing or misplaced, try a Miao-capable font or shaping system before deciding that the letter is another character.

Specialist and language-specific: use it in Miao-script text, language documentation, or cultural writing.

Without surrounding Miao writing, readers cannot identify the full syllable from 𖽈 alone.

Why does 𖽈 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Miao block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

Why is 𖽈 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
