What 𖾒 means
It moves the vowel below its consonant to mark tone. Pollard Miao puts small vowel signs around a large consonant. Their position identifies a tone category—the syllable’s pitch pattern. Alone, the mark has no vowel to move.
Reforms changed tone marking
Pollard and Miao collaborators shaped the script around 1904–05 to write A-Hmao, a Miao language of northeast Yunnan; two books appeared in 1905. Its design drew on Latin forms, English shorthand (abbreviated writing), Miao picture signs and Cree syllabics, a Canadian writing system for Cree. Later it reached some Yi and Lisu languages. Reforms from the 1950s added separate tone signs while keeping vowels on the baseline.

Questions people ask
1Does “below” mean low tone?
No. “Below” names the vowel’s position; that position marks a tone category, not a low pitch by itself.

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
