What ᴱ means

Read ᴱ by the transcription system around it.

Eemil Nestor Setälä proposed the Uralic Phonetic Alphabet (UPA) in 1901 to record pronunciation. Its superscripts mark very short sounds.

As of 2026, PHOIBLE, a database of sound inventories, uses ᴱ beside vowels for sphincteric phonation, a voice quality made by tightening the upper throat. This use is also documented for the !Xóõ language.
