Modifier Letter Lateral Click

54/57

𐞷 is an IPA modifier marking a lateral click release as secondary or incomplete. A lateral click lets air escape along the side of the tongue as part of another click in a transcription. The sound and its southern African writing traditions long predate this character's encoding.

What 𐞷 means

It adds a side release to another click in transcription.

A click consonant is made by sealing air in the mouth and releasing the tongue; for a lateral click, air escapes along one or both sides. In phonetic transcription, 𐞷 follows another click as a raised modifier to mark a weak, brief, or incomplete lateral release. It is a spacing character with phonetic meaning, not a font effect such as superscript styling.

How did lateral click notation develop?

The sound is old; its written conventions developed across traditions.

European missionary records began distinguishing Khoekhoe click phonemes in the 1830s. In the 1840s, writers experimented with systematic symbols, constrained by the type local presses could print. Tindall's 1857 Namaqua grammar used x for the lateral click; later specialist notation adopted vertical-bar click letters.

A Unicode proposal in 2020 described superscript click letters for secondary or incomplete articulation and included a lateral-release example. 𐞷 encodes that kind of phonetic modifier.

Why does Xhosa use x for the lateral click?

Xhosa and Zulu commonly use x for the lateral click.

These are different spelling traditions for click consonants: Khoekhoe writing uses vertical-bar click letters, while Xhosa and Zulu commonly write the lateral click with x.

Xhosa and Zulu click consonants are linked to long contact with communities speaking Khoisan languages, an umbrella term for several southern African language families. A 2020 study of Xhosa hlonipha—a respectful speech practice that can use substitute words—found click replacement was a proposed avoidance strategy but marginal. That evidence cautions against treating avoidance as the main story behind clicks in Xhosa.

A specialist transcription mark: precise in phonetics and opaque in ordinary prose.

Treat it as phonetic notation, not as punctuation or superscript styling.
