What ᶜ means
It marks a c-like sound as secondary to another sound. In phonetic transcription, ᶜ can show a secondary onset, release, or coloring. It may also signal a weak or inserted c-like articulation; the convention sets its exact value.
A 2003 proposal on phonetic modifier letters documents its use among linguists and treats modifier letters as distinct text characters.
A transliteration writes words from one language with another script. As of 2026-09-06, some systems that write Semitic languages in Latin letters used ᶜ for ayin, a consonant in Arabic and Hebrew. The surrounding system determines the reading.
How do I type ᶜ?
Use the character itself; superscript styling is different. This raised c is encoded separately from ordinary c, so applying superscript formatting to c does not produce ᶜ. HTML and source-code escapes can insert this character directly.
Specialist phonetic or transliteration notation; unusual in ordinary prose.
Without its notation, don't guess whether it means a c-like sound or ayin.

1Questions people ask
1Why does ᶜ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Phonetic Extensions Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
