What ၁ means
It is the Burmese numeral for one. In Burmese counting, တစ် is the cardinal word “one,” while ပထမ means “first.” ၁ answers “how many?”; the word answers “which position?”
How do I type ၁?
Use a Burmese layout or virtual keyboard. Unicode does not define one universal key position; the keyboard or input-method provider chooses the arrangement.
How old is ၁?
The numeral’s age is less certain than its script’s. The earliest surviving appearance of this exact numeral is not securely dated as of 2026-10-08; these milestones date the script, not ၁ itself. Late Brahmi, an ancient Indian script, is documented at Pyu settlements around the second to third centuries CE. A Brahmi-related South Indian script was adopted for writing Mon about the eighth century; the earliest Myanmar-script inscription dates to the eleventh century.
Number notation appears in calendars, dates, and dedications. Myanmar parabaik—folding books—also record administration, contracts, lending, inheritance, religion, and medicine. Myanmar script serves Mon, Karen, Kayah, Shan, Palaung, Pali, and Sanskrit; Karen and Pa’O traditions preserve numeral sets alongside Burmese equivalents.
Literal and neutral: read a standalone ၁ as the number one.
A box or Latin 1 points to a font, encoding, or script mismatch.
