Myanmar Letter Ssa

82/160

ၑ writes a Sanskrit s sound made with the tongue tip curled back, conventionally transliterated ṣa. Alone, it is a consonant letter, not a word; in Burmese text, it points to Sanskrit, historical, or specialist spelling rather than everyday Burmese.

What ၑ means

It writes Sanskrit ṣa, a retroflex sibilant. That means a hissing consonant made with the tongue tip curled back; ṣ is its scholarly Latin transliteration. By itself, ၑ is a consonant letter, so it cannot be translated without the surrounding word.

This is an inherited Myanmar-script letter, not an invented sign. Myanmar writing developed from a Brahmi-related script brought from South India to write Mon about the eighth century; its first known inscription dates to the eleventh century. The letter also appears in Old Burmese ligature examples—joined written forms—placing it in the script's older tradition.

is ၑ still used in Burmese?

Not in everyday Burmese spelling; it mainly preserves Sanskrit ṣa. A Burmese teaching guide from 2016 described ၐ and ၑ as out of daily use after Pali spellings had largely replaced Sanskrit forms in many Indic loanwords.

In Burmese writing, seeing ၑ points to a Sanskrit spelling or historical or specialist text. Its paired letter ၐ writes Sanskrit śa, a different sibilant formed farther forward in the mouth. Ordinary Burmese သ is a distinct sa letter and may take the place of Sanskrit ṣa in Burmese spellings.

Why can ၑ look different across fonts?

The character stays the same while fonts draw its glyph differently. A mismatch between Unicode and Zawgyi, a separate Myanmar text-encoding and font system, can also make text appear misplaced or wrong.

Myanmar-script Sanskrit can stack consonants into joined syllables. A virama—a mark that joins consonants—can place a following consonant below the first, changing the visible cluster around ၑ. A 2012 comparison showed an open inner ring in Padauk where the Unicode chart showed dots; both drawings represent the same letter.

Specialist or historical spelling: ၑ preserves Sanskrit ṣa; in Burmese writing it signals that distinction, not everyday spelling.

If the source is ordinary Burmese, do not replace its သ with ၑ; they mark different spellings.
