negative squared question mark

Negative Squared Question Mark

196/249

To enter 🯄 in a modern message, copy it from the palette above. This is a retro-computing display glyph from the Amstrad CPC, not a standard chat cue. Its square may look open because the font need not fill the whole cell.

Textsymbol

Was bedeutet 🯄

Use the palette in modern text; on CPC, use BASIC’s character code.

Its source is byte 0xFC in the Amstrad CPC character set. The 1984 CPC464 manual describes a 256-character display set for text and graphics, called up by number; PRINT CHR$(252) displays this character in CPC BASIC, and the manual assigns it no separate meaning.

If someone sends 🯄 alone, treat it as a possible retro-computing reference only when the conversation supports that; otherwise ask what they meant. Its history by itself does not reveal whether they are confused or joking.

Häufige Fragen

1

Why does the square look incomplete?

It can be incomplete. Unicode’s chart says the glyph need not reach the edges of its character cell, the screen area reserved for one character. Its exact outline follows the font.
