What 🨂 means
Use it in a fairy-chess position that includes a neutral rook. Fairy chess means chess problems with unusual pieces or rules. A neutral piece belongs exclusively to neither White nor Black, so either side may move or capture it. The problem’s rules specify the rook’s movement and any special conditions.
Neutral pieces were among the innovations associated with Thomas Rayner Dawson, a chess-problem composer who popularized fairy chess in the early twentieth century. Older diagrams sometimes used rotated white pieces for neutral roles; by the 2010s, published examples show forms split between one black half and one outlined half.
Chess was established in India by the sixth century and spread through the Islamic world. The English name rook came through French from Arabic rukhkh; its deeper origin is uncertain, though the Persian word rukh is often glossed as “chariot.” In medieval Europe, an abstract Persian chariot shape was interpreted as a tower or castle.
