What 𛆩 means
In Jiangyong speech, 𛆩 records khua44.
Nüshu signs usually represent spoken syllables. The script adapts Chinese character forms to write Jiangyong dialect speech in Hunan, China. Here, khua spells the sound and 44 marks its tone pattern, or voice pitch.
Nüshu gave women with little access to Chinese literacy a way to write local speech in letters, songs, life stories and bridal books; letters passed between women pledged as sisters. The oldest known artifact is a coin from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a rebel state in China (1851–1864), with an inscription saying women were one family. As schooling spread, daily use declined; study and preservation grew after its 1982 rediscovery.
