What 𛇊 means
Its recorded reading is tou42. Nüshu writes speech by syllable; the same sign can represent several local words that sound alike.
Women developed Nüshu in Jiangyong, Hunan, where schooling in Chinese characters was limited. They wrote biographies and messages on paper, fans, and cloth, and sang many texts. An ethnographic study identifies a 1931 county survey as the earliest written notice. A coin attributed to China's Taiping Heavenly Kingdom rebel regime (1851–1864) was judged inauthentic by a currency historian in 2004. Scholars disagree whether Nüshu grew from stylized Chinese handwriting and needlework or has older roots.

1Why does 𛇊 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
