What 𛇜 means
A Nüshu character table pairs it with Chinese 听, “hear/listen.”
The Jiangyong reading tshiong21 is a local pronunciation; “21” marks tone. Nüshu signs represent spoken syllables, and neighboring signs distinguish local words with the same sound.
How did Nüshu’s role change?
It grew from women’s writing into a heritage tradition.
Nüshu developed among women in Jiangyong, Hunan, reshaping Chinese-character forms to write local speech. Women with limited access to formal schooling used it for letters, poems, biographies and wedding books. The earliest known artifact is an inscribed coin model from the 1850s. China listed the script as intangible cultural heritage in 2006.

1Why does 𛇜 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
