Nüshu character

125/396

This glyph is one character in Nüshu, a syllabic script for local speech in Jiangyong, Hunan. Women used Nüshu for letters and songs, as part of a living writing practice. The exact English word for this sign depends on the surrounding text.

Text symbol

What 𛇬 means

It writes a Jiangyong syllable, not one fixed Chinese word.

One Nüshu correspondence list associates it with 既 (“already”), 气 (“air or energy”), 弃 (“abandon”), and 契 (“agreement”): words grouped by their Jiangyong-dialect reading. The sentence selects the intended word.

Nüshu writes speech syllable by syllable. Some of its forms adapt Chinese character shapes; others have shapes of their own.

Why did Jiangyong women use Nüshu?

The name means “women’s writing”; Nüshu is a script for local Jiangyong speech, not a separate spoken language. Some forms adapt Chinese characters and others are original. One historical interpretation places its creation no later than 1704, perhaps in the late Ming or early Qing dynasties, periods of imperial Chinese rule; a 1931 account describes it as tiny “fly-head” writing.

Women wrote songs, autobiographies, letters between sworn sisters (women who had pledged friendship), and sanzhaoshu: good-wish books close friends gave a bride three days after her wedding. In traditional practice, women sang Nüshu together while sewing and wrote it on fans and cloth. Some texts were buried with their writers or burned after death.

Practice declined after 1949 as work and education changed. By 2021, heritage classes and performances were carrying Nüshu to wider audiences.

What does someone mean by sending 𛇬 alone?

It identifies a Nüshu sign, but gives no complete word by itself.

Without the neighboring Nüshu characters, choosing a fixed translation would be guesswork.

This glyph points to Jiangyong women’s writing: a piece of a syllabic script with a local history, not a general decorative code.

Don’t translate it as just 既, 气, 弃, or 契; the surrounding line decides.
