nushu character-1b224

Nüshu Character 1B224

181/396

𛈤 writes a Jiangyong syllable in Nüshu, a women’s script; it does not represent one fixed Chinese word. Several Chinese characters can match that syllable, so the surrounding line decides which is meant. Women used the script for letters, songs, wedding messages, and personal histories.

Text symbol

What 𛈤 means

It writes a Jiangyong syllable; the surrounding line supplies the word. Nüshu records local speech one syllable at a time. Reference data associates this syllable with several Chinese characters, including 自, 字, 之, and 枝.

So 𛈤 has no single Chinese translation. Read it with the neighboring Nüshu syllables: the surrounding phrase distinguishes words with the same sound. Characters in a reference list are possible counterparts, not interchangeable definitions.

Why did women in Jiangyong write Nüshu?

It let women write their local speech and share personal texts. Women in Jiangyong County, Hunan, used Nüshu for letters between sworn sisters—women who pledged kinship to one another—as well as autobiographies, songs, riddles, embroidery, and wedding “third-day missives” given to brides. The writing passed among mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends, especially where women had little formal access to Chinese writing.

A bronze coin associated with the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (1851–1864) is the earliest known artifact; UNESCO identifies the first documentary evidence in a 1933 survey. Nüshu adapted Chinese character forms to local speech and could be written on paper, cloth, or in embroidery.

Someone sent me 𛈤. What can I tell?

You can identify Nüshu, but one glyph does not give a full translation. If it arrived alone, ask for the surrounding line before assigning a Chinese equivalent. A Chinese gloss explains that passage; it is not a permanent definition of the character.

Literary and heritage-oriented, with strong associations to historical women’s writing, Nüshu study, and cultural preservation.

Don’t translate it as one Chinese word; ask for the surrounding Nüshu line.

Questions people ask

2

Is Nüshu a secret language?

No. Nüshu is a script for local Jiangyong speech, not a separate spoken language. Men could understand the speech; the gender distinction was in the written tradition women shared through letters, songs, and other works.

Why does 𛈤 appear as an empty box?

Your browser or app may show a box if the active font lacks a Nüshu glyph. A font with Nüshu coverage can render the character.
