Worth knowing
- Nüshu developed in Jiangyong from Chinese-character forms, though its beginnings remain debated. Its earliest known artifact is a Taiping Heavenly Kingdom bronze coin (1851–64), inscribed with a message that women everywhere belong to one family.
- A 2010 field study reports women learning Nüshu by singing its stories and performing texts as nüge, local women’s songs. Jiangyong workshops began in 2003; China listed Nüshu for intangible heritage protection in 2006.
Questions people ask
1Why does 𛈵 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
