What 𛉉 means
It marks a sound, not a Chinese word.
Unicode lists tshoe44-a as this glyph’s reading. Nüshu adapts Chinese characters to write local Jiangyong speech; one sign can match several words that sound alike, so context tells you which word.
How did Nüshu begin?
It developed among women in Jiangyong, Hunan.
UNESCO dates Nüshu’s emergence to the 19th century; its earliest known artifact is an eight-character inscription on a coin of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (1851–1864), a rebel state in China. The coin’s message is that women everywhere belong to one family. Women with little access to schooling used it for letters between sworn sisters (close friends bound as sisters), biographies, songs and embroidery; friends gave brides good-wish letters three days after marriage. As of 2025, Chinese authorities were working to revive it.

1Why does 𛉉 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
