What 𛉐 means
As of 2026, type thi5 in Rime’s Nüshu scheme and select 𛉐.
Rime is a keyboard input system. thi5 is the Latin-letter spelling used for this Jiangyong syllable.
What does thi5 mean here?
It represents one spoken syllable, not a word by itself.
A 2015 Unicode proposal lists this sign’s Jiangyong reading as thi5; other transcription spellings exist. Nüshu reshaped Chinese-character forms to write Jiangyong speech in Hunan, giving many rural women with little schooling a way to share texts. Different local words that sound alike can use the same sign, so neighboring text determines the intended word.
What did Nüshu texts say?
They carried women’s daily lives, bonds and good wishes.
A bronze coin from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a rebel state in China (1851–1864), is the earliest known artifact; its inscription calls women worldwide one family. In nineteenth-century Jiangyong, women also wrote biographies, poems and songs; friends gave brides sanzhaoshu (“third-day letters”) of good wishes three days after the wedding. The earliest written account dates to 1931. By 2024, study and preservation had become part of Nüshu’s story.

1Why does 𛉐 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
