What 𛉬 means
It has a recorded Jiangyong reading: ciou13.
Unicode’s romanized label names a syllable in local Jiangyong speech; 13 marks its tone, or pitch pattern. Nüshu signs can stand for words pronounced alike, so nearby words pick the intended meaning.
Where did Nüshu writing come from?
It developed among rural women in Jiangyong, Hunan, China. Nüshu (“women’s writing”) adapted Chinese characters to local speech. Women shared songs, poems and letters while sewing or singing; many had little access to Chinese literacy.
A coin minted in 1851–1864 under China’s Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a rebel state, bears the earliest known Nüshu inscription: “Women around the world belong to one family.” Other works include autobiographies, songs and third-day wedding booklets of poems and wishes, given to a bride three days after her wedding.
