What 𛉰 means
It is read as lang44 in the Jiangyong dialect.
The Unicode Nüshu character list pairs it with Chinese-written 当 and 端. Its romanization is a sound notation for the local dialect, not a translation; those Chinese characters belong to the same local sound group.
What did women use Nüshu to write?
They wrote songs, letters, life stories, and wedding messages.
Historical Jiangyong women had fewer routes to formal schooling and used Nüshu to record their lives and maintain social ties. Its shapes developed from Chinese regular script through borrowing and alteration. By 2021, scholarship still debated when the tradition began and described its newer public heritage role alongside its earlier community use. The earliest written account researchers identify is a 1931 Hunan survey describing women singing from fans inscribed with the script.
