Nüshu gave women a way to write their stories
Nüshu developed among rural women in Jiangyong, Hunan, using Chinese-character forms to write local speech. Women with little access to formal literacy in Chinese characters used it for letters, biographies, songs and wedding booklets given to brides three days after marriage. Historically, women embroidered it on cloth.
The earliest known artifact is a Taiping Heavenly Kingdom coin (1851–1864); the earliest written references are dated 1931 or 1933. Use declined after 1949, and China recognized Nüshu as intangible cultural heritage in 2006.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
