𛊼 is a Nüshu sign for the spoken syllable ciu44, not a word with one fixed translation. Nüshu grew among women in Jiangyong, Hunan, as a way to write local speech and as a medium for songs, letters and wedding texts; a full line helps show which homophone the sign means.

What 𛊼 means

It represents the spoken syllable ciu44, not one fixed word. Unicode’s Nüshu source list records ciu44 as this glyph’s reading. Several words can share a Nüshu syllable, so the surrounding phrase or sung performance reveals which one the writer meant.

Why did women use Nüshu?

Women in Jiangyong developed it to write their local speech and literature. Nüshu adapts forms of Chinese characters to write the local Chinese dialect of Jiangyong, Hunan; many women who used it could not write Chinese in the standard character system.

In traditional Jiangyong practice, women exchanged letters between sworn sisters—friends joined by a formal sisterhood—and wedding books, and wrote songs, prayers and stories; texts were often sung or performed. Some local men also learned to read Nüshu, so “women’s writing” describes who carried the tradition, not an absolute ban.

One local legend set in the Song dynasty credits Hu Yuxiu, a woman of the imperial court, with inventing Nüshu; this is an origin story, not documented history. County surveys describe Nüshu already in use in 1931–1933 but do not date its beginning. A Nüshu-inscribed coin said to date from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (1851–1864), a rebel state in China, has been called the oldest artifact; its attribution was disputed in 2014, so it cannot securely date the script. By the late twentieth century, few fluent users remained and study and preservation work expanded.

Why does 𛊼 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
