What 𛊿 means
It represents a spoken syllable, not one fixed word.
The Jiangyong reading is transcribed as ku44; this sound can match words such as 孤 (“alone”) and 锅 (“pot”).
Rural Jiangyong women adapted Chinese character forms to write local speech where schooling was limited. The earliest reported artifact is a Taiping rebel-kingdom coin (1851–1864), inscribed with women as one family. Later it appeared in sisters’ letters, wedding books, and songs. As of 2026, an archive project catalogs Nüshu readings for preservation.
