𛋉

Nüshu character

346/396

𛋉 is a Nüshu character, a sound-based sign in a women's script used around Jiangyong, Hunan, amid limited access to formal schooling. It records local speech, so one glyph does not carry a universal word meaning alone. Women used Nüshu in personal writing, songs, and wedding gifts; its forms draw on Chinese characters.

Text symbol

What 𛋉 means

It records a local syllable; context supplies the intended word. Nüshu uses signs for spoken syllables in local speech around Jiangyong, Hunan. Several words that sound alike there may share a sign. Though its shapes draw on Chinese characters, Nüshu records sound rather than a word or part of a word.

What does it mean if someone sends 𛋉 alone?

It identifies a Nüshu sign, but does not express a full message. Someone familiar with the local speech can recognize the syllable, but one character may represent several words pronounced alike. The surrounding writing or sender's explanation tells which word was intended. If you received this glyph alone, it is not a universal emblem.

Texts ranged from personal accounts and exchanges among close women to sung works and public wedding settings. A third-day book was a volume of poems and advice given to a bride by women friends three days after her wedding. Calling Nüshu a secret code erases that public side.

When did Nüshu begin?

Its origin is debated; a Taiping-era coin is early evidence. A bronze coin from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (1851–1864) is identified as the earliest surviving Nüshu artifact. Its inscription declares that women across the world are one family, a public message of sisterhood.

Nüshu developed around Jiangyong, where Han Chinese culture and Yao traditions met; its exact origin remains debated. Since the 1980s, scholars and media have documented its texts as women's literature and supported cultural preservation.

A local women's writing tradition with private, ceremonial, and public forms.

Calling it a secret code erases its sung texts and public wedding writing.

Why does 𛋉 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Nushu block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
