Why did Jiangyong women use Nüshu?
To record local speech when many women lacked Chinese-character schooling.
Nüshu adapted Chinese character shapes to write Jiangyong speech in Hunan, China. Historically, women shared letters, songs and wedding books; they wrote Nüshu on fans, embroidered it on cloth and sang while sewing. The earliest trace cited is a coin inscription from China’s Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a rebel state (1851–1864); whether it circulated is disputed. A county history mentions it in 1931. Researchers found fluent writers in 1982; wider study and preservation followed.
