Old Hungarian number five

𐳻 is the Old Hungarian numeral for five, used in Rovás, a right-to-left writing system. The numeral tradition served practical counting, including village tax records kept on tally sticks. On its own, the glyph means five; surrounding Rovás writing can add heritage, business, or political context.

What 𐳻 means

It is the Old Hungarian numeral for five. It belongs to Rovás, the traditional Old Hungarian script written from right to left. The numeral system uses signs for 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, and 1,000, which combine by addition and multiplication to write larger quantities.

The wider Rovás tally tradition was used for counting. Across Hungary, it continued until the nineteenth century. Paired tally sticks recorded village taxes: each party kept one half as a matching receipt. The script's earliest authentic written mention is dated 1282–1285; its earliest accepted inscriptions date to the 13th–14th centuries.

Later witnesses show how the script was recorded and taught: the 15th-century Bologna calendar is known through a 1690 copy; the Nikolsburg alphabet is the oldest known alphabet witness; and Telegdi's Rudimenta, an instructional text, is dated 1598.

What can 𐳻 signal beyond five?

It still means five; surrounding Rovás can add identity context. On signs, labels, and designs, the script can signal heritage, business, or political identity. A 2024 study notes that some place-name signs were associated with Jobbik, while some readers rejected the script because of such political associations.

In the late 15th and 16th centuries, writers linked the script to Hun or Scythian ancestry; later writers proposed a Hebrew connection largely because it reads right to left. These were historical interpretations, not proof of ancestry. The script's origin remains uncertain, and proposed links to Turkic runiform traditions are not established.

Since the twentieth century, Old Hungarian numerals have appeared in publications, teaching materials, and public signs. Read an isolated 𐳻 as five first, then use the surrounding text and setting to understand any wider signal.

A historical numeral; its modern significance depends on the surrounding script and setting.

Its rune-like shape does not establish a connection to Scandinavian futhark.

Is 𐳻 a Scandinavian rune?

No. It is an Old Hungarian numeral used with the Rovás script; its runiform appearance alone does not establish a historical link to Scandinavian futhark.
