The circled 5, ⑤, marks item five in a numbered list. Its circle sets the label apart from surrounding text.

What ⑤ means

It marks the fifth item in an ordered list. The circle makes a compact list marker. Unicode 18.0 describes enclosed digits as numbered bullets; many were retained for compatibility with older East Asian character sets. The circled digits one through ten are unified with corresponding black-on-white numbers from ITC Zapf Dingbats Series 100, a printer's symbol set. Rich-text list styles have largely taken over that job.

A 2021 typesetting guide notes that some Latin fonts omit circled digits, so mixed-font text can look uneven.

Questions people ask

Why does ⑤ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
