What 𐍒 means
Alone, it is a letter sample or a reference to its sound. Gai represents the hard g sound. A script reference identifies an icon from the 14th century as the oldest known written record; Unicode describes surviving medieval writing as sparse: icons, short glosses (notes explaining a text), and monument inscriptions.
The Old Permic script was created to write Komi for Christian worship. Stefan of Perm translated Russian and Greek church and Bible texts into Komi, bringing the language into liturgy. The alphabet drew on Greek and Cyrillic models and traditional Komi signs called tamgas. One proposal links Gai's shape to the Early Cyrillic letter Glagoli, represented by г; another suggests a tamga origin.
From the 15th century, Old Permic also encoded Russian texts because most Russian readers did not know it; Komi use continued until the 17th century. A grave accent could mark palatalization (a softened consonant), but the marks were inconsistent and not always phonetic.
