Old Permic Letter An

1/43

𐍐 is Old Permic’s letter An, used for the vowel «a» in Komi writing. It opens the alphabet; its other name, Anbur, joins An with the next letter, Bur. Russian scribes later used the script as a cipher in the 16th century.

What 𐍐 means

For Komi text, a Unicode hexadecimal input tool can enter U10350.

Exact keystrokes depend on the app and operating system. 𐍐 is the standalone letter; the separate combining character 𐍶 sits above another letter in superscript abbreviations. If a font lacks Old Permic support, the correct text may appear as a missing-glyph box.

What does 𐍐 mean?

It writes the vowel «a» and opens the Old Permic alphabet.

Old Permic was made for Komi, the language of the Komi people, and is usually attributed to Stephen of Perm, a medieval missionary. Its sequence follows Greek and Cyrillic models; many letters draw on Komi tamgas, traditional marks that connect Christian teaching with local identity. A Troitsa icon—an Eastern Christian image of the Trinity—from the 14th century is among the earliest surviving witnesses, but it does not establish the script’s exact starting date. Most surviving examples are religious translations in manuscripts and on icons.

What happened to Old Permic writing?

It later served as a cipher, and Komi writing shifted to Cyrillic.

Russian scribes used the script for cryptographic writing in the 16th century. As of 2026, descriptions of modern use point to small enthusiast groups rather than everyday communication.

Some handwritten versions of An have F-like and Z-like forms. The screen shape 𐍐 is a font’s rendering, not one fixed historical drawing.

Archival and specialist; it belongs in Old Permic writing or discussion of the script.

For modern Cyrillic A, use А; 𐍐 is a distinct Old Permic letter.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𐍐 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Old Permic block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
