Palm Up Hand

9/11

🫴 is an open hand held palm up, the everyday gesture for offering something, asking for it, or beckoning someone closer. In messages it mostly means "here you go" or "give it here", and the words next to it tell you which. Sent alone as a reply it can be a one-handed shrug: "well?" or "no idea".

What 🫴 means

Both; the words around it decide. The emoji shows a still hand seen from the side, fingers slightly curled, palm up. That is the hand you hold out to pass someone a coin, to receive one, to catch a thrown key, or to wave a friend over, so every one of those meanings is available.

Put it right before another emoji and it presents that thing: 🫴 is "this is for you", 🫴 is "made you a coffee". Put it after a request and it becomes the gimme hand: "send the photos 🫴" means "come on, hand them over". People also use it for "pay up", as in 🫴, and for a playful "go on, explain" when they want someone to spill details.

On its own, with nothing around it, it reads as a small shrug or an open question, a quieter cousin of . If you want to be clear, add a word or two; the hand alone is deliberately open-ended.

Why the same gesture is friendly in one country and rude in another

Palm-up beckoning is polite in the West and offensive in much of East Asia. In Europe and the Americas, curling your fingers toward yourself with the palm up is a normal "come here". In Japan, Korea and the Philippines that gesture is used for animals, and beckoning a person with it is considered rude or dismissive; people there beckon with the palm facing down, fingers flapping toward the body.

In messages the emoji is harmless, because no fingers move and the picture is just an open hand. The cultural split matters more if a chat about meeting up turns into a real wave across a room. Most of the time the hand simply says "go ahead", "take it" or "your turn", and it suits casual chats, work messages and everything in between.

Neutral and casual; fine with friends, family and colleagues. It never carries sarcasm or anger on its own.

After a request it can read as a demand ("hand it over"), so soften it with a word if you are asking a favour.

Questions people ask

2

Why does 🫴 show as a blank box or a question mark?

It is a 2021 emoji, so phones and computers that have not been updated since then have no picture for it. The sender sees the hand; you see a placeholder until your system updates.

Is 🫴 the same as a shrug?

Not quite. Sent alone it can stand in for "no idea", but it is milder and more open than ; it also means offering, asking and beckoning, which a shrug never does.
