What ㈡ means

It is the single-character marker for the second list item. Unicode describes enclosed one-to-ten numbers as numbered bullets; their parenthetical frame echoes typewriter list notation.

Japan’s JIS C 6226 character-encoding standard was established in 1978 and later became JIS X 0208. That records the encoding lineage, not when the printed form first appeared.

(二)
㈡ is one precomposed character; (二) is three characters. Compatibility normalization—a text-conversion rule—can turn ㈡ into (二).

Questions people ask

1

Why does ㈡ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
