Text symbol

What ⚻ means

It names a five-point layout and an astrological aspect.

In geometry, four positions sit around a fifth at the center. In astrology, an aspect is the angle between chart points; a quincunx is 150. Astrologers often read that mismatch as a call for adjustment.

How did the word gain these meanings?

It began as a Roman coin name, then described layouts and astrology.

The word’s first known English use is dated 1545. Its Latin name combines words for “five” and “one-twelfth.” A Roman quincunx was worth five twelfths of an as, a basic Roman coin unit; its five marks followed the four-around-one pattern.

English records use quincunx for a tree-planting plan by 1606. The word described a layout as well as a coin value: four trees at the corners and one in the middle.

Astrology added an angular meaning. An aspect is the relationship between two points in a chart. Classical astrologers treated zodiac signs five places apart as “averse”—unable to see one another. English records use quincunx for this angle by 1647. Astrologers commonly describe it as tension that calls for adjustment.

How should you read it in a message?

Let the surrounding topic tell you which meaning fits.

A chart or aspect list points to astrology; a coin, planting plan, or design discussion points to its historical or geometric senses. Sent alone, it is an obscure specialist symbol, not a reliable emotional cue. If the sender gives no context, ask what topic they mean.

Technical or historical in general; astrology gives it a specific 150 reading.

Alone, it is not a reliable emotional cue.
