What ⦐ means
It closes a grouped mathematical expression. MathML, a markup language for formulas, classifies ⦐ as a postfix fence: it comes after the expression it closes.
MathML's operator dictionary—its list of display rules—marks it stretchable and symmetric, so a renderer can lengthen it to fit a tall expression and center it on the formula's middle line. These are layout instructions; the surrounding notation determines the expression's mathematical meaning.
Questions people ask
1Why does ⦐ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
