What Ⅲ means
Their roots are in the number signs of ancient Italy. Etruscan signs are among the forms linked to Roman numerals; the Etruscans were an ancient people of central Italy, and the exact path is debated. The signs recorded quantities and spread through Roman and medieval European writing. In Ⅲ, I is the Roman sign for one, repeated three times.
