What 𐹦 means
𐹦 marks seven in the Rumi/Fasi numeral system. It is additive and non-positional: signs for ones, tens, and hundreds have separate values, instead of each digit changing value by its place as it does in modern decimal writing.
The earliest surviving written description is al-Uqlīdisī’s account, completed in Damascus in 952–53 CE. Western examples appear in Mozarabic and Toledan manuscripts in the 12th–13th centuries, as well as in Moroccan legal and commercial records.
Where did Rumi numerals come from?
They connect to Coptic or Greek-Coptic numeral traditions. The precise path into a separate Rumi system remains unsettled; another numeral practice called zimām has also been proposed as an influence.
Rumi numerals suited compact record-keeping: accounts, legal and commercial work, page and chapter marks in books, and calculations in religious, scientific, and mathematical manuscripts. They also appeared on astronomical instruments. Page, chapter, and group-of-sheets marks helped readers navigate manuscripts.
Why does 𐹦 look different?
Unicode shows one historical form, not a timeless template. Its reference glyph is based on a copy of Ibn al-Banna’s manuscript and resembles forms from the 16th-century Maghreb.
Rumi signs vary by period and scribe, so fonts can give 𐹦 a different silhouette. That change in shape does not change its value in the Rumi system: seven.
Archival and specialist: it reads as historical notation, not everyday decimal writing.
Use it as a historical numeral, not a normal replacement for modern 7.
