rumi fraction one third

Rumi Fraction One Third

30/31

𐹽 means one third in the historical Rumi numeral system. Rumi numerals appear in old manuscript, mathematical, accounting, and astronomical contexts. The twist is that one third had its own sign even though many Rumi fractions were built with a slash.

What 𐹽 means

It means one third in Rumi numerical writing.

A Rumi fraction could put the top number at the upper right and the bottom number at the lower left, separated by a short slash. In a copy of an arithmetic manual by the mathematician Ibn al-Banna, one third also appears as a dedicated sign alongside one half, one quarter, and two thirds.

Where did Rumi numerals come from?

They grew from Coptic or Greek-Coptic numeral traditions.

The earliest surviving mention of Rumi numerals is in al-Uqlidisi’s arithmetic text, completed in Damascus in 952–53 CE. The name Rumi means “Roman.”

The system was used from the 10th to 17th centuries CE, from Egypt through the Maghreb to al-Andalus, the historical name for Muslim-ruled Iberia. Rumi signs appear in manuscript page, chapter, and section numbering, accounting, mathematics, and astronomical instruments. In Morocco, they were also called Fasi or Fez numerals. Unicode’s reference shapes are based on a copy of an arithmetic manual by Ibn al-Banna, a mathematician in Marrakesh; manuscripts vary, and the point when Rumi became a distinct system remains uncertain as of 2025.
