rumi number fifty

Rumi Number Fifty

14/31

𐹭 is the Rumi/Fāsī numeral for fifty, a dedicated sign in a historical number system. Rumi numerals appear in accounts, manuscript page and section notes, mathematical works and astronomical instruments. The chart shape is one handwritten form; the system is linked to Coptic or Greek-Coptic numerals, though Egyptian zimām influence remains a proposal.

What 𐹭 means

It means fifty in the historical Rumi numeral system.

Rumi numerals, also called Fāsī numerals, use dedicated signs for values rather than decimal place positions; 𐹭 represents fifty. The value comes from the signs themselves, not from a digit's position as in decimal writing.

The earliest surviving mention is in al-Uqlīdisī’s arithmetic, completed in Damascus in 952–953 CE. Rumi numerals are documented from the tenth to seventeenth centuries across Egypt, the Maghreb (northwest Africa), and al-Andalus in Iberia. They served administration and accounting, marked manuscript pages, chapters and quires (bundles of folded sheets), and appeared in mathematical works and astronomical instruments. Related Mozarabic/Toledan forms—numerals associated with medieval Toledo—appear in manuscripts from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The system is linked to Coptic/Greek-Coptic numerals. Coptic is an Egyptian language written in an adapted Greek alphabet; Egyptian zimām numerals may also have influenced it.

Why does 𐹭 look different in old manuscripts?

Because handwritten Rumi numerals varied across time and place.

The chart form comes from a copy of Ibn al-Bannā’s mathematical manuscript and resembles sixteenth-century Maghrebi examples. Other manuscripts draw the same numeral differently, so an outline mismatch alone does not mean a different value.

On screen, your font and browser determine whether 𐹭 appears and which outline you see. An app may show a blank box if its font lacks the character.

Historical and specialist; outside calculation, manuscript or related writing, readers may not recognize its value.

Pair it with “50” when readers need its value at a glance.
