What ᛔ means
It represents the p sound in medieval runic writing. A dot gives the b-rune ᛒ a separate value for p; the open-p rune ᛕ records the same sound with a different shape.
Where did the dotted p rune come from?
The evidence connects Scandinavia with the British Isles. The history of ᛔ reaches late Viking Age Scandinavia: a dotted p appears on a runestone from Västergötland, and English manuscript rune rows include it around AD 1050 at the latest.
The origin of dotted runes is debated. Michael Schulte argues that Scandinavian communities in the British Isles are the likeliest setting, where Old Norse, Old English, and Gaelic speakers encountered runes alongside Latin book writing and Ogam, an alphabet used for inscriptions. He treats the innovation as the result of overlapping language and script contacts, not one trigger.
A historical letter, most at home in a runic spelling or a clearly marked design.
Do not label ᛔ as the Anglo-Saxon p-rune ᛈ.

1Can I use ᛔ for rune divination?
Not as an established historical reading. As of 2026, no fixed divination meaning is established for ᛔ. You can give it a personal modern meaning; label it as yours rather than an old runic rule.
