What 𑇡 means
It marks one within a historical Sinhala number system. Illakkam was additive rather than positional: tens had their own signs, and there was no zero.
The system developed over time, with a possible lineage from Brahmi numerals. A 2025 study dates the oldest sampled Sinhala Illakkam palm-leaf witness to the 16th century; the numerals marked or indexed manuscripts in Pali, a language used in Buddhist texts, and Sinhala literature. In 1815, the Kandyan Convention, a treaty between Britain and the Kandyan Kingdom, used them to number its Sinhala clauses. After the 18th century, Pansal Hodiya became a later manuscript numbering convention. During colonial rule, Indo-Arabic numerals spread. A separate set, Lith Illakkam, served astrology and native medicine.
What does 𑇡 mean in a message?
Treat it first as a historical reference.
A manuscript specialist can read it as one; someone unfamiliar with Illakkam may need context. It fits a discussion of a source, transcription, or Sinhala numeral history. For everyday quantity, write 1.
Archival and specialist; in ordinary chat it reads as a deliberate historical reference, not a casual quantity.
Don't assume the recipient will read it as modern 1.
