Squared 中

30/49

🈭 is the Chinese character 中 (“middle”, “centre”) inside a square. It comes from the symbol set of Japanese digital television, where it labels the centre fielder in baseball; in Japanese that position, 中堅手, is shortened to 中. It is not an emoji, so on many phones it appears as a plain text glyph or an empty box.

What 🈭 means

It is 中, “centre”, boxed to label a baseball centre fielder. The character inside is one of the most common in Chinese and Japanese: it means middle or inside, appears in the name of China (中国, literally “middle country”) and, in Japanese, is read chū or naka.

Japanese baseball shortens fielding positions to a single character: 左, 中 and 右 are left, centre and right field, and 中 stands for 中堅手, the centre fielder. On a scorecard the same player is number 8. In a square, the character becomes a compact label for broadcast graphics.

The square comes from the symbol set of Japanese digital broadcasting, which Unicode took over in 2009 as the “Enclosed Ideographic Supplement”. Its neighbours include the other outfield marks and . Unlike a few of its neighbours, 🈭 never became an emoji, so it has no colourful picture and no emoji keyboard entry.

Outside Japanese sports graphics you will rarely meet it. If it reaches you in a message, the sender is probably talking about baseball, copied it from a symbol list, or meant the plain word 中 and picked the boxed one by accident.

Neutral and technical: a label from TV sports graphics, with no emotional tone of its own.

It is a different character from 中: unless an app normalizes text, searching for 中 may not find 🈭.

Worth knowing

  • Its neighbour does double duty: Unicode notes it as the designated-hitter mark, yet it became an emoji as the “reserved” button. 🈭 and the fielding positions stayed plain text.

Questions people ask

3

Is 🈭 just 中 with a box?

Yes in meaning, no as a character. It has its own number in Unicode, so many searches and spell-checkers treat it as something else. Clean-up using NFKC normalization (folding styled variants into ordinary ones) turns it into plain 中.

Why does 🈭 show as an empty box or a question mark?

Because many fonts, especially outside Japanese system fonts, don't include this block. The box means the font has no drawing for it; the character is usually still there and pastes elsewhere intact.

How do I type 🈭?

There is no key. In Word on Windows, type 1F22D then AltX; on a Mac, search the Character Viewer for 1F22D; on GNOME and other GTK desktops, CtrlShiftU, then 1F22D and Space.
