What ᮱ means
It writes one in Sundanese.
A late fifteenth-century manuscript puts an earlier form of one in a leaf's left margin as its page number. Kawali's Old Sundanese stone inscriptions in West Java are estimated to date to the 14th century.
The script's ancestry runs from Brahmi through Pallava to Old Sundanese; both Brahmi and Pallava are Indian scripts. Sundanese was also written in Javanese and Arabic scripts. As of 2026, it also uses Latin script.
Why are Sundanese numerals enclosed in pipes?
Vertical bars separate numerals from similar-looking consonants.
Sundanese guidance marks numeral groups with vertical bars because some digits resemble consonants. In ᮱, the bars show a number; they do not change its value.

Questions people ask
1Why does ᮱ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
