What ᮅ means
It lets a syllable begin with the vowel u. When a consonant comes first, ᮥ attaches to it to mark the same vowel.
The Sundanese script descends from Pallava, an ancient South Indian script, and appears in inscriptions and manuscripts. The Kawali stone inscription is an early Old Sundanese example, generally dated to the 14th century.
From the 17th to 20th centuries, Sundanese also appeared in Javanese and Arabic scripts. Latin letters became widespread in the 20th century; the modern Sundanese-script standard became official in 1996.
