tagalog letter da

Tagalog Letter Da

8/23

In Baybayin, the traditional Tagalog script, ᜇ is the syllable da with its a vowel built in; older spelling can also use it for ra. You’ll meet it in lessons, historical texts, and heritage art. Modern writers may use ᜍ to spell ra separately, so check the convention when reading a name.

What ᜇ means

Start with da; older Baybayin spelling can use it for ra too.

Baybayin writes consonants as syllables: ᜇ carries a by default. Traditional Tagalog spelling did not always distinguish d and r; modern writing may give ra its own sign, ᜍ.

A standalone ᜇ therefore cannot settle the reading of every name. For a name or tattoo, check the writer’s spelling convention before treating it as one sound.

Where did Baybayin come from?

Baybayin grew from older writing traditions, though its exact route is unclear.

Baybayin is a traditional Tagalog script from the Philippines, connected to the wider Brahmi tradition of writing from South Asia. South Indian Pallava scripts reached the Philippines; they may have arrived through Kawi, an old script used in western Java. Hanunóo, Buhid, and Tagbanwa are related Philippine scripts, though not necessarily direct descendants of Baybayin.

Written accounts and Tagalog documents date from the mid-1500s. A claim that the Calatagan Pot carries Baybayin from the 15th century is disputed, so it is not a secure early example. A book in Baybayin was printed in Manila in 1593; surviving land deeds dated 1613 and 1625 show its use in legal records. The script fell out of ordinary use by the mid-1700s.

Traditional and referential, with a choice between older and modern spelling conventions.

For a name or tattoo, confirm whether the writer intends da or ra.

Drift: At a 2024 Philippine consular exhibit, Baybayin tattoos were presented as a way to connect Filipino roots, identity, and heritage; in this setting, choosing between ᜇ and ᜍ can carry more than a reading.
