What ᥚ means
It marks an initial p with a puff of air. In Tai Nüa, also called Tai Le or Dehong Dai, ᥚ is a consonant letter. It starts a syllable, before its vowel; any tone mark comes after the whole syllable. Alone, it gives you a sound, not a complete word.
Tai Le writing belongs to the Lik Tai tradition. Historians place that tradition’s development in Moeng Maw during the twelfth–fourteenth centuries; its earliest dated reference is 1396, and a dated example appears in a Ming scroll from 1407. Burmese writing has been proposed as a model, but the script’s origin remains debated.
Lik Tai writing was adapted for Tai languages before Buddhist use; later Dehong manuscripts include Jataka stories, Buddhist tales about the Buddha’s earlier lives. The modern spelling system developed after 1954 and first used combining tone marks; a 1988 revision replaced them with spacing tone letters. These reforms changed the tone notation around ᥚ, not its consonant role.
What does ᥚ mean when sent alone?
Treat it as a letter sample, not a complete word. A lone ᥚ gives you only an initial consonant; it cannot identify the word or its tone. Ask for the surrounding Tai Nüa text before translating it.
The sequence ᥚᥬᥴ means “who” in Tai Nüa; the letters after ᥚ complete the syllable.
How do you type ᥚ?
Use a Tai Le keyboard layout and a font with Tai Le coverage. Keyman’s Tai Le Basic layout provides keyboard input. A square-shaped missing-glyph box points to display support: the keyboard can enter ᥚ while the current font or app fails to draw it.

1Why does ᥚ show as a square?
A square means the font or app is not displaying the glyph. The keyboard can enter ᥚ correctly while the current font lacks Tai Le coverage; use an app and font that support the script.
