Text symbol

What ꪵ means

It marks a vowel inside a Tai Viet syllable. In Tai Dam, ꪵ represents /ɛ/, an open “eh” vowel like the one in English “bed.”

Tai Viet is used to write several related Tai languages. The letter’s exact sound and spelling depend on the language; “vowel E” is a character label, not a pronunciation rule.

Where did Tai Viet come from?

Its recognizable form took shape around the 16th century. Reference accounts connect it to Thai writing traditions, including the older Sukhothai script. That describes a script that evolved over time, not a one-time invention. A 2006 Unicode proposal said the oldest dated Tai Daeng document then available from Laos was a manuscript about 30 years old.

Tai Viet has been used to write Tai languages in communities in Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and elsewhere. Tai Dam manuscripts preserve origin stories, epics, and texts used by fortune-tellers, showing how writing carried literature and community memory.

Tone marks also vary by community: Tai Dam writers in the United States use marks derived from Lao, while Tai writers in Vietnam place tone marks along the baseline. These marks affect a syllable’s tone, not the identity of ꪵ.

Why does ꪵ come before its consonant?

Tai Viet writes some vowels before the consonants they belong to. ꪵ is one of these preposed vowels, so text stores it before its consonant. A font and text shaper that support Tai Viet should display it in that order; a blank box or misplaced sign points to missing display support. Software that expects vowels after consonants may sort or parse it incorrectly.

In Tai Dam, ꪵ and ꪫ can spell one vowel around a consonant: ꪵꪫ. The stands for the consonant; the sound is an “eh” vowel spoken with rounded lips. Some dialects add ꪥ to distinguish this spelling.

A language-specific vowel for Tai Viet writing and script study.

“Vowel E” is a label; its sound depends on the Tai language.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ꪵ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tai Viet block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
