What 𘠨 means
It helps describe and index larger Tangut characters. Tangut components are structural units used to analyze characters and find them in dictionaries. In Ideographic Description Sequences (IDS), a notation for showing how a written character is built, components describe how its parts fit together. The label “041” is a catalogue number, not a word reading.
The Tangut script was created under the first Western Xia emperor about 1036 to write the Tangut language. It served official, private, and religious writing, including books, Buddhist sutras (scriptures), inscriptions, and manuscripts.
Tangut writing continued through the Yuan and Ming periods after Western Xia fell, before the script became obsolete. It was influenced by Chinese writing, but was not simply copied from Chinese or Khitan writing.
Why does a Tangut character show as a blank box?
A font without Tangut coverage cannot draw the character.
Display is font-dependent: a browser or app may show a blank box when its selected font lacks Tangut coverage. Unicode still identifies the character; the device needs a font that contains Tangut glyphs to draw it.
How can I enter a Tangut character?
Use Unicode input or a Tangut-specific input method.
As of 2026, the community Rime Xunpin input method offers Tangut entry by pronunciation, strokes, four-corner codes, or components. A four-corner code identifies a character from the shapes at its corners.
