Tangut Component 095

95/768

𘡞 is Tangut component 095, a modern scholarly label for finding and describing full Tangut characters; by itself, it is not a word. The Xixia script served Buddhist, official, and translated writing.

What 𘡞 means

No: it marks part of a full Tangut character. Number 095 is an inventory label, not a reading. A component may contribute sound or meaning, and its role depends on the whole character; dictionaries use different component systems.

Why was the Xixia script created?

The Western Xia court wanted a written culture of its own. Western Xia emperor Li Yuanhao ordered the Tangut script’s creation around 1036 to support Buddhist scripture in Tangut and a distinct state identity. It drew on Chinese writing and earlier scripts made by neighboring Khitan people, yet remained separate.

A manuscript from Khara-Khoto, a ruined city in Inner Mongolia, probably from the 12th or early 13th century, preserves Chinese stories translated into Tangut. After Western Xia fell, Tangut writing continued under the Yuan and Ming dynasties, then became obsolete by the Ming’s end. Scholars now use components to index, describe, and analyze full characters.

Why does 𘡞 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut Components block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
