Tangut Component-182

182/768

𘢵 is a structural part used to describe and analyze Tangut characters, not a standalone Tangut word with a translation. The Tangut script served as Western Xia’s state writing system, and its use outlasted that state. “Component-182” is a catalogue label, not a reading.

What 𘢵 means

𘢵 names a structural part, not a standalone Tangut word. Tangut components are used to describe and analyze characters. Some components also serve as radicals: filing labels that help readers find full characters. Tangut dictionaries from the Western Xia period were not organized by radicals; modern dictionaries use different systems. The number 182 is a modern catalogue label, not a Tangut word or reading.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It gave Western Xia an official writing system for Tangut. The court ordered an original script for Tangut, which became the government’s designated writing system around 1036. It served administration and a broad written culture: Buddhist sutras (scriptures) and translations, Chinese classics, books, inscriptions, and manuscripts.

Tangut characters follow a square-form tradition associated with Chinese characters, but Tangut is a distinct writing system. Khitan writing under Liao and Jurchen writing under Jin were other state-script projects of the same period; being contemporaries does not establish direct descent. Tangut writing continued under Yuan and Ming rule after Western Xia fell, becoming obsolete by the end of Ming. Modern study revived through inscriptions and manuscripts from Khara-Khoto.

Why does 𘢵 show as a box?

A missing-glyph box means the selected font lacks Tangut coverage. Display is font-dependent: some fonts include Tangut components, while others cover only part of the set. An Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS) uses components together to describe a larger Tangut character. Rendering is software-dependent: an app without IDS support may show the component pieces separately instead of as one character.

Technical and scholarly: a standalone use reads as Tangut character analysis, reference work, or font testing.

The number 182 is a catalogue label, not a Tangut reading.

Why does 𘢵 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
