What 𘤡 means
It labels a component used to analyze larger Tangut characters. The modern component record assigns it no standalone translation; the larger Tangut character supplies the reading.
The Tangut script was developed under Western Xia’s first emperor about 1036 CE to write the Tangut language. It appeared in state, private, and religious writing, including Buddhist sutras, inscriptions, and manuscripts. Modern component indexes help researchers and dictionaries organize and compare the larger characters.
By the end of the Ming dynasty, the script had become obsolete; scholars rediscovered it in the late 19th century. Its modern component labels mainly serve scholarship and digital text tools. Tangut characters can resemble Chinese characters, but Tangut is a separate script; both were traditionally written in vertical columns.
Why does 𘤡 show as a box?
A Tangut-capable font must include the glyph. If a browser, editor, or device has no font with Tangut coverage, it may display a missing-glyph box even when the character is encoded correctly.
Scholarly and technical: it signals Tangut analysis, dictionary indexing, font testing, or Unicode work.
Do not assign it a word reading on its own; the larger Tangut character supplies the reading.
Questions people ask
