Tangut Component-312

312/768

𘤷 is a Tangut component: a structural part used to describe whole Tangut characters, not a word with a dependable translation by itself. Tangut writing, also called Xixia, served the Western Xia state and Buddhist texts. This entry is useful in character analysis or font testing; 312 is an inventory label, not a reading.

Text symbol

What 𘤷 means

It marks a unit in Tangut character analysis.

Tangut components are used to describe and index full characters. They can also appear in an Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS), a short formula that shows how a character is built. Here, 312 is an inventory number, not a pronunciation.

When was Tangut writing used?

It spread in 1036 and outlasted Western Xia.

Tangut writing was disseminated in 1036 under Li Yuanhao, ruler of Western Xia, and used for government writing and Buddhist translations. It remained in use after the state fell in 1227; a known pair of Buddhist pillars bearing Tangut inscriptions was erected in 1502.

Tangut writing uses structural ideas also found in Chinese character analysis, but it is a distinct script; this number belongs to a Tangut analysis inventory.

Where is 𘤷 useful?

Use it in technical work on Tangut characters.

Dictionary indexes and character descriptions can use components to identify parts; font testing can check whether a system displays the glyph. Someone looking for a whole Tangut word needs the complete character, not this inventory entry.

Technical and scholarly; suited to Tangut dictionaries, IDS descriptions, character analysis, and font testing.

Alone, it does not communicate a whole Tangut word.
